22 Oct Differences between PGT-M and PGT-A
Preimplantation Genetic Testing is a genetic analysis that allows to analyze embryos in order to select those with greater possibilities of giving rise to a healthy child. Thus, PGT constitutes a fundamental part in any assisted reproduction procedure in the search for pregnancy.
Preimplantation genetic tests: what it is?
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a genetic analysis performed on embryos before they are transferred to the maternal womb. The embryos are obtained through an in vitro fertilization cycle in an Assisted Reproduction Clinic. Once the test result is obtained, only those embryos that are healthy are transferred to the womb.
There are two types of PGT:
Main differences between PGT-M and PGT-A
Next, we decipher the main differences between PGT-M and PGT-A:
PGT-M is indicated for couples at high risk of transmitting a genetic disease to their offspring, when parent/s are affected or carriers of a specific known genetic disease. The PGT-M will determine which embryos are free of the genetic disease and are, therefore, healthy, and can be transferred to the maternal womb.
PGT-A is a test that allows us to detect anomalies in the number of chromosomes (extra or missing chromosomes) and transfer only those chromosomally normal embryos to the maternal womb. Although most embryos can not survive with a missing or extra chromosome and are related to implantation failure or spontaneous miscarriage, some others can survive till birth leading to a baby affected of a genetic syndrome (for example, Down syndrome).
Can both tests be done at the same time?
Yes, it is possible to study the number of chromosomes of the embryo as well as the presence of a certain familial genetic disease at the same time. Modern reproductive technology allows multiple possibilities of studies and analysis for an optimal development and birth of a healthy baby.
In any case, the professional in charge of your assisted reproduction procedure, in collaboration with geneticists, will be responsible for determining what genetic tests are recommended in your case
