Exercise and fertility

Can exercise affect fertility? The lifestyle directly influences the fertility of men and women. Having a BMI (Body Mass Index) outside the healthy range can be a cause of not being able to get pregnant.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can improve the chances of having a family. This is achieved by maintaining a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and fiber; exercising moderately and avoiding the consumption of toxic substances, such as tobacco and alcohol.

How can exercise help me get pregnant?

Performing physical exercise will often be positive for many areas of your health, not just fertility. Also, if your body mass index is higher than healthy (overweight), exercise will significantly help fat loss, always next to a healthy diet, low in calories.

Sedentary people usually have a body mass index higher than normal, which means more likely to suffer from diseases such as diabetes, cancer or heart problems. Overweight can cause an alteration in hormones, increasing the production of androgens (sometimes called “male hormones,”) and increasing insulin levels associated with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

What are the benefits of physical exercise on fertility?

Physical exercise is highly recommended if you are looking for pregnancy, and also in the gestation period, provided that the doctor has not indicated otherwise and the exercises adapt to pregnancy. The most outstanding benefits of performing exercise with continuity are:

  • Maintains a healthy body mass index.
  • Improves circulation and oxygenation of the system.
  • Improves insulin resistance.
  • Improve flexibility.
  • Regulates blood pressure.
  • It helps to balance hormones and improves their production.
  • It reduces stress.
  • Improves self-esteem.

What are the best sports for a pregnancy?

Sports that use the balance between body and mind such as yoga or pilates are in high demand. These exercises reduce stress, provide flexibility to the body, improve posture and work the pelvic area, a very important point for women or future moms.

The combination of perfect exercise would combine one of these disciplines mentioned above with another sport that activates our heart and helps us lose weight if necessary.

An example could be the static bicycle, easy to use and in our house. We can spend 30 minutes a day pedaling while doing other tasks. Also, integrate more active habits on a daily basis. This is very useful to lose weight and improve your fertility, these can be: use the stairs instead of the elevator, try to walk to more places, swimming or doing aerobics at home, etc.

We encourage you to change your day-to-day habits for healthier ones that help improve fertility.
