Preimplantation Genetic Testing

At PGD-Labs we perform a genetic test called Preimplantation Genetic Test, which lets us detect the chromosomal sex of embryos that will be implanted during an IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) cycle – whether each embryo is XX (female) or XY (male).

Thanks to this test, we are also able to detect aneuploidies related to sex chromosomes. Some of these alterations are related to Turner and Klinefelter syndrome, among others.

How does baby gender selection work?

  • 1) We obtain embryos developed in a specialized lab at a fertility unit through an IVF cycle.
  • 2) We perform a biopsy on the third day of development of the embryo, out of which we extract a cell without putting its development at risk.
  • 3) We process the obtained sample and perform a genetic analysis. This test is carried out through the FISH method and provides us with information about the sex chromosome content of the embryo.
  • 4) We issue a report that clearly specifies the sex chromosome content of each embryo to the fertility unit for them to transfer it.
