Genetic disorder

At PGD Labs, a center that specializes in Reproductive Genetics located in Kuwait, we help couples willing to form a family and have healthy children who are free from genetic disorders .

We work closely with Fertility Clinics from around the world to perform analyses and prepare reports for their patients before conception, during a fertility treatment, during pregnancy and after giving birth.

What is a genetic disorder?

It is a pathology that arises as a result of a defective or missing gene, as well as a chromosomal mutation. Depending on the type of alteration in our genetic code we will develop one of many diseases.

These disorders may be hereditary, and therefore transmitted from parents to children, or non-hereditary. Genetic alterations may also be caused by a combination of several mutations and environmental factors, known as multifactorial disorders.

In order to determine the cause, it is necessary to perform a painstaking gene test to find alleles that may be causing these genetic disorders. In addition, and thanks to technological advances and the continuous training of biology and reproduction specialists, now it is possible to determine whether an embryo has some kind of genetic disorder. Here is where PGD Labs’ team comes in.

Most common types of genetic disorders

Below you will find a short list of 5 of the most common disorders today:

  • Cystic fibrosis. This is one of the most frequent hereditary pathologies. It appears when the body is missing a protein that is in charge of balancing chloride. For a baby to be affected by it, the parents should be carriers of the disease.
  • Down Syndrome. People affected by it have an extra chromosome that contains genes that bears information that determines a person’s characteristics and traits.
  • Celiac Disease. Not to be confused with gluten intolerance. It affects the digestive system hen consuming food containing gluten, which is a protein that is pervasive in cereals.
  • Huntington’s Chorea. It is mainly characterized by being incurable due to the degeneration of cells and neurons in the central nervous system. People with this disease have a 50% chance to pass it off to their offspring.
  • Becker Muscular Dystrophy. This is a type of muscular dystrophy that has a genetic origin and degenerative consequences that mostly affect voluntary muscles, since they weaken, causing a general fatigue.

At PGD Labs we help couples conceive a healthy child free from any genetic disorder, and we accomplish this by painstakingly studying each embryo and discarding those that have some form of genetic or chromosomal alteration. Get in touch with us if you want to know more.
