- Analyze the embryo’s chromosomes and discard those that have chromosomal anomalies.
- Identify a specific disease, such as cystic fibrosis. This is accomplished through a painstaking analysis of DNA inside the cells.
- Choose the desired gender. Patients may have two clear reasons to pick their baby’s gender: either because some diseases are transmitted genetically and are gender-based, or because they are looking to form a balanced family.
- Transfer selected embryos to the uterus to achieve the pregnancy via in vitro fertilization.
How is the PGD treatment performed?
- 1. This treatment is performed after the second stage of in vitro fertilization. The fertilized egg is cultured for approximately one week, until it reaches the blastocyst stage.
- 2. A small cell sample is extracted from the pre-placenta using a laser and a microscopic glass needle.
- 3. The DNA is analyzed to identify a specific disease – especially diseases transmitted to males through the mother.
- 4. The healthy embryo is transferred to the uterus during the following stage of in vitro fertilization.
