A lot has been said about infertility, but secondary infertility is largely unknown. Its causes have not been thoroughly explained and many couples have kept the fact that they could not conceive for a second time to themselves. However, this problem affects many couples around the world.

Secondary infertility is a couple’s inability to become pregnant after 1 year or more of trying without using contraceptives after having already had a child.

It is usually caused by:

Deficiencies in the production, functioning or ejaculation of sperm in men.

For women, this may happen due to problems in the Fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, endometriosis and uterine conditions.

Complications from a previous pregnancy or surgery.

Maternal age. In the case of women, after 36 the chances of having children decrease; however, the number of women that delay motherhood is on the rise, and this does pose an obstacle.

Increased weight, a sedentary lifestyle or not getting enough rest. This means that having healthy habits is essential for giving life.

The use of specific medications can hinder the chances of pregnancy. If one or both partners are taking medications they should consult with their physicians to know whether the treatment can hinder conception.

Do you already have children but are trying to have another baby? If the little bundle of joy does not arrive, it may be due to secondary infertility, which can be resolved with the right treatment.
